Award Categories 2012

Creative Digital Media

(open to primary, special and secondary schools)

Entries to this category will make use of creative digital media to support teaching and learning. The digital media could be used as stimulus material or as an outcome from:

  • project work
  • resource development
  • editing existing digital materials

Where the digital media is an outcome schools will need to demonstrate that pupils have been extensively involved in creating / developing / editing the resource. Schools should submit clear descriptions of the project supported by storyboards, audio files, photos or videos where appropriate.

Animations

(open to primary, special and secondary schools)

Entries to this category should be a short animated presentation created using school ICT hardware and software and should be no longer than 2 minutes. The subject of the animated presentation is left to the school's choice. Schools will need to demonstrate that pupils have been extensively involved in creating the animation. The animation should include sound and moving images. Schools should submit clear descriptions of the project supported by storyboards, audio files, photos or videos where appropriate.

Collaboration Through Technology

(open to primary, special and secondary schools)

Entries to this category will show how ICT hardware and software can be used to enhance links that promote collaborative learning with other individuals or groups. The links could be within the school, the LA, the region or beyond. Entries will demonstrate how working with others enhances teaching and learning. There are no restrictions on the technology used but it may involve Learning Platforms, Social Media or Video Conferencing. Schools should submit clear descriptions of the projects supported by storyboards, audio files, photos or videos where appropriate. Schools should be prepared to welcome judges to the school if required.

Please note: multiple entries from the same class will be treated as a single entry.

Computer Graphics and Art

(open to under 7 year olds, primary and secondary schools)

In addition to the usual primary and secondary awards this category also includes a section for under sevens. Entries should be pictures or images created or processed within computer graphics packages. The judges will want to see a progression of skills within the different age groups. Work by older pupils will need to include evidence of planning and different stages of creation or evaluation.

Please note: multiple entries from the same class will be treated as a single entry.

Promotion of the Region

(open to primary, special and secondary schools)

Pupils should provide presentations or promotional material that promotes their region or locality through text, images, sound or video. These presentations should be created through ICT and presented either in paper format or as digital media. Schools should submit clear descriptions of the project supported by storyboards, audio files, photos or videos where appropriate.

Practitioner Award

(open to primary, special and secondary practitioners – practitioners can be nominated by their colleagues, school or Local Authority)

This award will recognise innovative use of ICT to promote teaching and learning by individual practitioners whatever their role. Entries will need to include detailed accounts of the technology used and how it has made an impact in the classroom, school and, if appropriate, beyond. Schools should submit clear descriptions of the activity supported by audio files, photos or videos where appropriate. Schools should be prepared to welcome judges to the school if required.

ICT in a Subject

(open to primary, special and secondary schools)

Entries need to demonstrate how the use of ICT supports teaching and learning with a subject area. Schools can choose the subject area they want to focus on. Because there may be difficulty in representing this outside the school, schools should submit clear descriptions of the projects supported by audio files, photos or videos. Schools should be prepared to welcome judges to the school if required.

eSafety

(open to primary, special and secondary schools)

eSafety is an important issue for schools to consider. Entries to this award should demonstrate how schools are meeting the challenges it presents.

These may include:

  • descriptions of activities to raise awareness of staff, pupils and parents
  • the establishment of internal systems to support all users
  • the establishment of systems which provide support outside of school

Personalisation

(open to primary, special and secondary schools)

Entries should show how ICT has been used to support the personalised learning agenda. This includes how ICT is helping every child to meet their potential. Examples could include the creative use of remote learning, use of Learning Platforms, use of PDAs or other handheld devices or individualisation of resources using ICT. Submissions should include feedback from teachers, pupils, parents or other users of the system. Schools should be prepared to welcome judges to the school if required.

Embedding Learning Platforms

(open to primary, special and secondary schools)

In 2011 we introduced a new award category to recognise the important work of schools and the Learning Platform Network within the region and beyond.

The LPN is an ambitious initiative to connect and support schools in their use of learning platforms. The award will recognise the achievements of schools that have embedded the use of their Learning Platform across the whole school, to support leadership, innovative and appropriate teaching and learning, assessment, data management and communication with all members of the learning community. Submissions should include descriptions of how the platform is being used and with evidence from teachers, pupils, parents or other users of the system. Schools should be prepared to welcome judges to the school if required.

Surprise Me!

(open to primary, special and secondary schools)

This category is a chance to submit entries that involve the use of ICT in new and innovative ways that do not fit into any of the other categories. Schools should submit clear descriptions of the activity supported by audio files, photos or videos where appropriate. Schools should be prepared to welcome judges to the school if required.

Overall Excellence in ICT

(open to primary, special and secondary schools – schools can be nominated by their staff or Local Authority)

In previous years schools have had to be nominated by their LA. We have opened this up so now anyone can send in an entry. Entries must show that the nominated school has demonstrated the positive impact ICT has had on all aspects of school life. Schools that get shortlisted for this category will be visited by external judges; the visit will be arranged in advance and can be used for a tour of the school and meetings with pupils, teachers, parents or governors.
