Creative Strategies to Support Literacy in Key Stage 2
Who is this course for?
- All teachers in Key Stage 2
- Literacy coordinators
- Creative Curriculum coordinators
Aims:
- To identify ways in which literacy skills of learners of all abilities can be extended and supported
- To introduce teachers to a range of online tools and strategies to support all learners
- To share ideas and successful activities
- To establish a group of enthusiastic and willing teachers to continue the project beyond the course.
Outcomes:
All teachers:
- Will have the opportunity to use a range of online tools to support literacy
- Develop and consolidate their understanding of the use of blogs to raise achievement and self esteem
- Have access to a regional and local network of likeminded teachers to continue the project beyond the course.
This course is in two parts (chapters) and although we encourage teachers to attend Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 we understand that this will not be possible for everyone. Each chapter is a valuable CPD opportunity and teachers can, if necessary, choose to attend either or both.
Chapter 1
The Great Mystery Literacy Project
December 2nd at The Open University in the North - repeated am/pm
Teachers will be introduced to an exciting and creative collaborative project based on a ‘whodunit’ theme and led by Bill Lord, the inspiring and engaging literacy consultant with a reputation for bringing fun and purpose to literacy activities, with impressive results.
Course will include:
- Support and guidance on creating blogs
- Literacy subject knowledge training
- introduction to the ‘Cluedo’ themed project
- Medium/short term planning materials for teachers
- Links to Teachers’ TV and other key multimedia resources

Chapter 2
February 1st 2012 at Open Zone, South Tyneside

February 2nd 2012 at Middlesbrough CLC
Teachers will learn about the exciting and creative collaborative project, and participating local schools. The project is based on a ‘whodunit’ theme and led by Bill Lord, the inspiring and engaging literacy consultant with a reputation for bringing fun and purpose to literacy activities, with impressive results.
Course will include:
- Practical examples of strategies and activities to support literacy including; role play, formal and informal writing, blogging by teachers and pupils.
- An opportunity to join the collaborative online project
- Guidance on how to address key areas of literacy to aid progress and engagement.
