The Gallery is a great resource with over 35,000 images, videos and sounds for use in the classroom. But we want to make it even better by increasing the number and range of images available and for this we need your help.
Each term we are looking for images based on one or two of the themes and we are asking you and your students to take and upload images based on those themes.
We’ll publish all the images that are suitable, i.e. are good high resolution images that are appropriate to the theme and are suitable for inclusion on an educational site. And each term, for each theme, we’ll nominate the best image per age group to go forward to the national final. Each finalist will receive a large, high quality, framed print of their image.
The themes are:
- I Believe. Images to represent religious beliefs: places of worship, religious regalia, religious practice, religious ceremonies
- My Kind of People. Images of people at work or leisure, posed or candid shots, groups, crowds, or individuals
- Special Occasions. This could be a secular or religious occasion, a public, community or private event such as a wedding, naming ceremony, a party or a festival
- My Backyard. It doesn’t have to be a large garden, it might be a space that you share with others, it might not be behind your house, it could even be a balcony
- Memorabilia. To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen, images of artefacts and memorabilia from the last 60 years
The themes can be interpreted as widely as possible. So the theme ‘My Backyard’ could be taken literally to mean the space behind the photographer’s home or interpreted as the outside area with which they are familiar; somewhere they hang out. The ‘backyard’ could be a large suburban garden, a balcony or a public space. The focus of the image might be someone digging vegetables, a line of washing, a drop of rain on a leaf or rusting domestic appliances. The approach might be arty, action or documentary, the results picturesque or gritty urban realism.
And in September 2012, as a seperate activity:
- Olympics and Other Sporting Events. Images of and from the Olympic Stadium, sporting events, sporting artefacts. And sporting events that are NOT part of the Olympics such as greyhound racing, fishing, the sack race or the village fete tug o’ war
Who can enter?
Images are welcome from all age groups and there will be separate categories for Primary and Secondary entries. Entries are welcomed from all schools connected to the National Education Network (NEN).
Please remember that if you are taking a picture of a person, you make sure that they give their permission to be photographed and included in the Gallery before the photograph is taken. This is especially important if the individual(s) could be identified from their image.
We will announce the winners of the E2BN, NEN and the Gallery websites.
How to enter
Go to the competition area of the E2BN website and click on the ‘Snap IT, Share IT’ competition link. You will need to have ready details of your school, email address, telephone number and the category you are entering. Then simply fill in the form, not forgetting to attach all your entries. More than one entry can be made by individual schools to allow different classes or year groups to participate.
Judging
The images will be judged by a panel of people working in education and also knowledgeable about photography. There will be a separate judging category for schools staff submitting their own pictures.
