The broadband Northern Grid for Learning provides to schools and Local Authorities is currently provided through Easynet. Our contract with Easynet will expire on July 31st 2012. Northern Grid is almost at the end of a rigorous procurement process to source an even better service. We are working closely with schools and Local Authorities to ensure the new service meets the needs of teachers and learners.
BT has been identified as our Preferred Bidder and we hope to sign the new contract in the next few weeks.
The procurement has been successful in reducing broadband costs by an average of 20% meaning that schools should see lower prices from 2012 onwards. Because the contract offers savings "in life", costs will reduce for many schools. All schools can be confident that their charges will be "pegged" to prevent increased costs.
The new technology BT will deliver means an improved service for users. The contract will ensure that as new technologies become available schools will benefit from upgrades at no extra cost and in many cases prices will come down further.
Northern Grid knows that safeguarding is a high priority for schools and all of the eSafety and eSecurity features they have come to expect will continue. BT will also work closely with Northern Grid to identify and deliver the other services and support that schools need. More information about these new services will be shared as it becomes available.
Northern Grid is confident that the new contract will provide the best service possible for schools. As a not for profit organisation we are committed to keeping our prices as low as possible.
We are aware that other broadband providers are offering alternative solutions to schools. We would advise schools to contact Northern Grid or their Local Authority before accepting an offer from a different provider.
